Big hair – that is, hair that has lots of volume – is all the rage for summer 2010. When you decide to wear your hair big and bouncy, make sure that you can run your fingers through your hair. You should have lots of volume, not a helmet like in the '80s. The secret to making big hair look great this summer is to finish your style in a way that won't look exaggerated. You need to make sure that the kind of volume you create suits your hair texture as well as the shape of your face.
You need to prep your hair, and it's best to use a volumizing shampoo and conditioner. If you have fine hair use a protein based product and it will appear fuller. Blow-dry your hair a section at a time with a round brush; keep in mind that the bigger the barrel the bigger the hair. If your hair is short, add texture and lift. A rat tail comb and strong hairspray will let you tease your hair as big as you want or you can simply use a good texturizing product on day-old hair for a mussed look.
A bouncy, voluminous blow-dry works great on medium hair, but make sure your hair can swing and move. A rounded shape works the best as long as there is a smooth and shiny finish. If you aren't careful, a long hairstyle will look limp, so make sure you use volumizing shampoo and conditioner and tease lightly at the crown, right after you blow-dry. You can also crimp the bottom layers which will help make a cushion for the rest of your hair to sit on.
